How I Hosted A Neighborhood Spring Cleaning Event with Goodwill Akron
Spring cleaning season hit a little differently this year—and in the best possible way.
Last week, a Goodwill Mobile Donation Center was parked right in my driveway, and thanks to the generosity of my incredible neighbors, we filled it to the brim with donations in just a few days. What started as a simple idea turned into a powerful reminder of what a community can do when we come together.
I reached out to my neighborhood with an invitation to declutter for a cause. People dropped off home décor, bikes, toys, clothing, small appliances, books, and so much more. Some even came by multiple times as they tackled closets, garages, and basements.
Here’s how it worked: I simply reached out to Goodwill Akron and booked the trailer—for free! After I signed up, they contacted me to confirm the drop-off date. On the scheduled day, I showed them where to place it in my driveway. That was it! A week later, they came back to pick it up—and I didn’t even have to be home. It couldn’t have been easier.
Every box, bag, and bundle donated will support Goodwill’s mission to provide job training, employment placement, and community-based services. That’s the beauty of secondhand giving—our donations don’t just clear clutter; they create opportunities.
Watching the trailer fill up day by day was such a fulfilling experience. It felt like we weren’t just cleaning out our homes—we were putting good back into the world.
If this sounds like something you’d love to do, here are a few tips to make it a smooth and successful experience:
- Reach out to Goodwill Akron
Complete an online booking form on the Goodwill Akron website. They will reach out to you with additional information. - Pick the right time
Spring and early summer are perfect, but back-to-school season or the holidays can work well too. Choose a week when people are likely already cleaning or organizing. - Spread the word
I posted in my neighborhood Facebook group. Additionally, you could send a note through neighborhood apps like Nextdoor, or print flyers for nearby homes. Be specific about what can be donated and include the dates and location. - Make it easy for donors
Keep the area around the trailer clean and clearly mark where donations should go. I gave clear instructions on the Facebook group, including things like: drop off times, what to NOT donate, how to open the trailer, and instructions on what to do with donations if they have trouble opening the door. You could even consider leaving out a box of trash bags or boxes for convenience. - Keep the vibe positive and fun
Post updates as the trailer fills, thank your neighbors publicly, and share how their donations are making an impact. - Document the journey
Take photos or short videos to share with Goodwill (they love success stories!) and your community. It can inspire others to host similar events.
This was one of the most rewarding community experiences I’ve been part of, and I’d love to see more neighborhoods try it too. If you’ve got the space, the spirit, and a little spring cleaning energy—go for it!
