DIY Junk Hats: The Perfect Maximalist Accessory

I mentioned last month that I’m excited for the maximalist trend.  But it’s more than just a trend.  It’s a return to truly expressing yourself through your outfit. One accessory that I kept seeing was embellished hats. These embellished or junk hats are so easy to thrift and DIY yourself. Everything from patches to bedazzled with rhinestones and pearls. You can customize this maximalist accessory to perfectly fit your style.

What you’ll need:

Baseball cap/hat

Brooches

Pins

Safety pins/kilt pins

First, you need a baseball cap or hat. You can thrift one or use one you already have.  If you’re using pins or brooches, you can easily remove the embellishments, and you’ll have your regular hat back.

Next, gather your embellishments and get creative. The possibilities are endless. I used vintage and thrifted brooches and pins.

Attach your embellishments. If you’re using pins, just be mindful of how you attach them.  You still want it to be comfortable to wear.

And that’s it, a super-easy way to customize and personalize a hat. This method of customization can be applied to other items like a blazer, denim jacket, or even a handbag. So get creative by expressing yourself through this maximalist trend.
