Refashion Shrunken Sweaters into Stylish Vests

Today I’ll be sharing a little DIY on a sweater that has been on a journey, if you will.

I purchased this sweater back in 2020 or so- wore it a couple years then threw it in my clothing swap pile. Well, it came back to me last winter at another clothing swap but sadly the sleeves had been shrunken and were just too tight. It’s been sitting on my sewing table for almost a year and I finally decided to refashion it.

For this DIY I used:

seam rippers

fabric scissors

bias tape

sewing pins

iron/ironing board

sewing machine

I also used another sweater vest as a guide for how I wanted to cut this one.

First, I ripped the side seams of the sweater open and removed the sleeves as well.

Then, I used my guide sweater to cut the arm

holes to the right size.

Here is a good video on how to use bias tape if you’re not familiar with it.

Iron the bias tape and pin onto the open seams right side up.

I sewed the seam at 1/8” to have the smallest seam possible.

After trimming the bias tape down, I then did a 3/8” top stitch on the front of the sweater all

The way down the seams.

This is the inside finished product.

You could add buttons or ribbon under the arm holes to keep the vest from flapping around.

 Finito!!!

What do you think? I love how this diy turned out and I hope it inspires you to save some of the shrunken sweaters from the thrift store and do your own up-cycle project! 😊
