Met Gala 2023 Meets Goodwill

a blog by Julie Holiday

WOW! I was SO inspired by the fashion at the 2023 Met Gala. The red carpet was bursting with art-inspired garments.

I typically get around to watching it, but it was streaming at the local Akron spot my husband and I decided to check out the evening of May 1st.

This year’s theme was ‘Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty’ to honor Karl Lagerfeld, a regular attendee at The Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute. I decided to take my enthusiasm to the Medina, Ohio Goodwill location and see what we could acquire to carry along the trends. Let’s go!

MET GALA THEME: Black & White

An unmistakable color theme for the 2023 Met Gala was black and white. Oh, the drama! From Cardi B in Chenpeng Studio to Jenna Ortega in Thom Browne and Marli Jewelry, the dramatic and repetitive color scheme screamed, “simple and classic.”

There’s little better than a “Little Black Dress.” Black is slimming and it goes with just about anything. What about adding white? The look instantly becomes classic with a dual overtone.

Many celebrities donned black and white at the Gala. Kendall Jenner in Marc Jacobs and Wolford wore a stunning superhero-esque top with dramatic cape-like sleeves.

Jennifer Lopez stopped mid-stair in a Ralph Lauren black and white-gloved option with a long train. I spotted this black and white dress for $7.49 at the Medina, Ohio Goodwill.

What do you think of it?

It was hard not to stop for a double take on this eclectic large art piece at the Medina Goodwill. I was THOROUGHLY impressed with the selection of art.

I was thoroughly impressed with the selection of art. I instantly thought of the haunting decor from the movie, “Beetlejuice.” Anyone else?

MET GALA THEME: Masculine Garments

Cardi B wore a tie. Jenna Ortega wore a bolo tie (cowboy tie) and I wore a men’s (brand new) white button-up dress shirt.

One of my FAVORITE things about shopping at Goodwill is the amount of “new with tags” items the retail chain has! To me, the look and feel of a well-structured dress shirt is unparalleled. I found this one (and kept this one) for $4.99! Come to Mama. I may have been Cara Delevingne in Karl Lagerfeld’s twin.

Side note: I spotted (and purchased) these incredible parachute pants with studded decor and fabric chains. They reflected the 2023 Met Gala choices of Eddie Redmayne and Sean “Diddy” Combs in Sean John.

MET GALA THEME: Platforms

We saw pairs of some of the most extreme platforms in show history. WOW! I am inspired!

Give me all the oversized shoes. Most notable at the Gala include Kendall Jenner in Marc Jacobs, wearing a pair of the designer’s signature sky-high platform boots, and Janelle Monáe in a pair of white Mary Jane platforms with straps done in the designer’s signature stripe. The latter loafers resemble the black and white brogues Kristen Stewart wore.

MET GALA THEME: Cats

I think hands-down the most playful look was accomplished by Jared Leto.

He dressed as a huge cat. HAHA

Not only did he pay massive homage to Lagerfeld’s beloved cat Choupette, he also sported a flawless bayalage ‘do.

Similar to the one I’m pictured in here.

Don’t I look just like Jarod Leto?!
