12 Months of Thrifting: Cozy Sweater

For January’s Twelve Months of Thrifting Challenge, we’re starting off with cozy, slouchy, chunky sweaters. I use those three terms interchangeably. These are an absolute must have for every essential wardrobe. They are comfortable, practical, and extremely stylish. The key is to look for a sweater that hangs nicely off the body, and one that provides enough room for you to layer if needed but not too much room where it’s falling off of you.  Look for long styles that cover your bottom because you want to pair your slouchy sweater with a slim bottom like skinny jeans or leggings for a streamlined look. Proportion is everything with oversized sweaters.

Tips for thrifting a cozy sweater:

Be Inspired:

A simple “cozy sweater’ search on Pinterest will yield hundreds if not thousands of results. Go ahead, try it. Take a screen shot of your favorite one and use that as a guide when you go to the thrift store next time.  Try on several sweaters until you feel comfortable. Because that’s the whole point, cozy sweaters are meant to be comfy.

Be Bold.

An oversized sweater will serve as the focal point of your outfit so why not go for a cool, unique pattern? The thrift store carries tons of one-of-a-kind textures and prints that can elevate a casual look. Personally, I’m a huge fan of 1980s chunky sweaters. Some sweaters may look awful on the hanger but don’t be afraid to try things on! You will be surprised how different they can feel and look once you style them.

Be Basic.

Whether or not you’re sold on the Cliff Huxtable look, stock up on a couple oversized cozy sweaters in cream, tan or gray. These neutral colors will work well with practically anything you own. You can throw on a pair of black skinnies, jeans or even tights.

Be like the Boys.

Steal your grandpa’s style and take a walk over to the men’s department for an even bigger variety of cozy sweaters. Pick a style you like and make it your own.

Pro Thrift Tips:

Goodwill organizes sweaters by size, which makes it much easier to narrow down your selection. Also, most of these sweaters can be machine washed. I usually lay them flat to dry.

Don’t let one trip discourage you from going back. Research the stores in your area and try a new store or go on another day. Inventory changes daily at most thrift stores. I usually thrift every two weeks. Plus, you have the entire month of January to find a cozy sweater, so take your time so you don’t feel overwhelmed.
