12 Months of Thrifting: February Prompt – Vases

Welcome back to the second prompt of the 12 Months of Thrifting challenge. Last month we focused on thrifting storage solutions for our homes and this month we’re thrifting vases.

Why thrift vases?
Recycling vases is one of the most sustainable things you can do for your home. Places like Goodwill Akron carry a huge variety of vases in all shapes, colors, sizes, and textures. Whatever your style is, I’m sure you’ll find it.

If you’re thinking we only thrift vases for flowers, you’re in for a treat! We have several tips and ideas on how you can make the most out of your secondhand vases.

Gift them: Not only can you use vases for floral arrangement in your own home, you can also keep a handful of vases in different shapes on hand for gifts throughout the year. Next time you pick up a bouquet for someone, take it out of the plastic and pop it into a thrifted vase. Better yet, have a flower garden at home? Create homemade arrangements for loved ones and use your thrifted vases. It’s a great way to elevate your gift giving game without breaking the bank.

Create a colorful collection: I needed to fill a creative void after being quarantined for several weeks last summer, so being the color enthusiast that I am, I decided to fill the ledge in my kitchen with a rainbow assortment of colored vases. I set a budget of $1 for each vase and by the end of the summer I had collected enough to complete the rainbow. It’s one of my favorite projects to date!

Repurpose vases for special events: From bridal showers, to weddings, to birthday parties, there are countless uses for vases for special events. Use them as center pieces, give them as favors, use them to store utensils or straws, just to name a few ideas.

Use them for a work-related project: Thrifted vases are great for florists, workshops, teachers, artists, interior designers or realtors or anyone who needs to temporarily stage a home.

Fill them up with vase fillers: Don’t have any flowers on hand? Fill vases with ornaments, scented fillers, succulents, pens, or anything else you want!

DIY: There are dozens of creative uses for your vases. Paint them, wrap them in yarn, use washi tape to create designs, turn them into chalkboard vases or hang them on a wall to create a floating vase.

Happy thrifting!
