#12MonthsofThrifting: Cozy Sweater Recap

12 months of thrifting

We’ve wrapped up the first month of the #12MonthsofThrifting challenge. This challenge is designed to help new and beginning thrifters build a thrifted wardrobe throughout 2016. The prompt for January was to thrift a cozy sweater. Last month, I shared my go-to tips to keep in mind while thrifting a sweater: be bold, be basic, be inspired, be like the boys. I chose a sweater as a prompt for January because if you get the right style they can be practical, comfortable, and stylish. We had a great mix of veteran bargain shoppers and new thrifters join us in January. Read about their finds and the tricks they use to thrift a cozy sweater.

I thrifted two cozy sweaters this month. I focused my strategy on finding loose, comfy and practical sweaters. I found the cream one in the men’s section and the striped one was new with tags. Total spent: $6 on both.

Chrissy thrifted her sweater with pockets for $2 from her local thrift store. She likes to think beyond just sizes when thrifting, she focus on colors, patterns, and fabrics.

Kim’s spin on this look included a $2.49 sweater from her local Goodwill. Shopping beyond your typical size is a must among thrifters. Kim’s go to trick: “I try always try everything on. I’m a medium but have thrifted smalls and extra larges.”

Michele thrifted this staple sweater for $2. She looks for classic and vintage pieces that she can blend into her current wardrobe.

This sweater was $3 from Michelle’s local Goodwill. Michelle follows some of my favorite thrift tips: she makes a list and always check’s the men’s section.

Janine thrifted this staple sweater for $4.59. Janine also sticks to a thrift wish list and uses thrifting as a way to fill in gaps in her closet.

Friend and fellow blogger, Abby thrifted
this sweater on our thrift tour last fall. She’s also ahead of the game
with a thrifted trench (April’s prompt). Abby knew she was looking for
something oversized so she went straight to the men’s section and scored
this sweater for less than $6.

Thanks to everyone who participated in this challenge! The next prompt is a striped tee. Stay tuned for style inspiration and tips in the coming week. Be sure to share your finds using the #12MonthsofThrifting on social media for a chance to be featured.  And if you have a favorite find, enter Goodwill’s  #LoveGoodwill Photo Contest.  Submit a photo by Feb. 21 of your favorite Goodwill find for a chance to win a $50 Goodwill Gift Card or one of two $25 Goodwill Gift Cards. Voting will take place Feb. 22-28, 2016.
