Thrifting 2024 Fall Fashion Trends

As you step outside into the muggy, humid heat of early August, it is hard to imagine shopping for sweaters, coats, boots and vests. While it is still very hot here in Ohio, now is a great time to get a head start on your fall wardrobe and thrifting is a great way to incorporate trending items in a sustainable and affordable way. As we look at the runway fashion trends that have been predicted for Fall 2024 as well as everyday wearable fashion trends, we can find things we love and that fit our style and see what we can add to our closet and complement what we already have.

The thing about trends is that they can be “in” this season and “out” next season. I never pay full price for trends and love the thrill of the hunt, adding things to my thrifting wishlist and hunting for the perfect trendy items each season. I also love putting some things away for a few years (hello skinny jeans and blanket scarves) and waiting for them to make a comeback as a trend again years later and already having those items in my closet.

In this blog post, I have compiled a list of some things to be on the lookout for this Fall that are easy ways to add to your Fall wardrobe or to shop your closet and bring items back out for this upcoming season.

Full Skirts

This trend will not be for everyone, but if you want to get onboard with this trend, finding one full skirt could be a great way to add to your closet for a way to dress up your clothing, for a night out or a special event, for family pictures or for the office. This trend comes and goes but this season they are saying the fuller the skirt the better. I like to pick solid colors or easy patterns to mix and match with a sweater, bodysuit, turtleneck or button-down shirt.

Leopard Print

This trend is back! This is one of those trends that comes and goes frequently. One season, it is considered “not on trend” and other seasons, like Fall 2024, the fashion experts are predicting it will be everywhere. This is a trend you can have a lot of fun with, adding pops of leopard with shoes or hats or donning a full outfit like a dress or jumpsuit.  This is a trend that I kept items from a few years ago in storage and now that they are back, I already have items in my closet. Shop for fun sweaters, dresses, jumpsuits, shoes, jeans, skirts and boots. I recently thrifted a pair of fun high-top sneakers with a small pop of leopard from the laces, so if you do not want to fully embrace this trend, this is a great way to do it.

Satin

This is a trend that has been around for a few seasons now, but it is here to stay for the Fall.  The easiest way to incorporate this trend is to find a good satin skirt. I recently found a black satin skirt while thrifting and I have had so much fun mixing and matching outfits this summer and cannot wait to add a fun sweater, plaid shirt or a sweatshirt for the Fall. I recently paired a thrifted band tee with the skirt and added some fun sneakers. Throw on a jean jacket or moto jacket with this and it completes the look for a chilly Fall night. I also found a beautiful green satin dress while thrifting and wore it to a wedding a few weeks ago and plan to keep it in my closet for some future weddings and for a time I need to dress up.  I have also seen some really cute satin pants, button down shirts and jumpsuits.

The Color Green

Each season has an “it” color and this Fall it is the color green. This is an easy way to be on trend and I have seen some beautiful green coats, boots, sweaters, pants and tops. Any shade of green seems to be the trend but especially jewel tones and earth tones.

Cropped Jackets

This was a trend last Fall and Winter, and we are seeing it stay for another season. Unlike past seasons where we have seen longer cardigans, coats, vests and jackets, the fashion experts are predicting that the cropped puffer jackets, jean jackets, vests and blazers will be everywhere.  A great way to incorporate this trend is to look for cropped jean jackets, moto jackets and puffer vests.

Sheer

This trend has been around for a few seasons as well, but a great way to incorporate the sheer trend this season is to layer a top with a blazer, a jean jacket, a fitted vest and to pair it with jeans, trousers, under a dress, under overalls or a jumpsuit. I like to look for sheer tops and incorporate those with items I have.

Fur

Fur is making a comeback. I remember this trend was big back in 2012/2013 and I still have some faux fur vests that I will be bringing back this season. Brown fur is predicted to be really popular this season, but any fur or faux fur will be something to look for. I thrifted a beautiful faux fur coat last year and love it so much. I will also be adding my faux fur vests with a sheer top, wide leg or flare leg jeans and a solid color bodysuit this season. I see fur or faux fur on so many thrifting trips so keep an eye out if this is a trend you want to add to your closet.

Western/Fringe

This trend is a fun one that comes and goes as well. I recently thrifted a super cute dress, tall white cowboy boots and a hat that I will be wearing this Fall. Look for vests, jackets and purses with fringe, fun cowboy boots and dresses to add to your closet.

Plaid

This last trend is something that screams Fall to me. I think we all have some type of plaid in our closet and this is a trend that is going to be big this year but is always a Fall staple. I love to find good quality brands like J Crew and Madewell plaid shirts as these will last me for years. Adding plaid to jeans, skirts, trousers, and leggings are easy ways to incorporate this trend. I also love to shop for plaid heels, coats and blazers.

These are just a few of the many trends you can expect to see this Fall. I hope these pictures and ideas help spark some creativity if you choose to thrift these trends and I hope you have as much fun as I do shopping for the items that you want to add to your closet. As always, if you find something that you love, make sure to tag Goodwill Akron so we can see how you incorporated your own style to stay on trend this upcoming Fall season.

Happy Thrifting,
Erin
