History of Radio Reading Services in Ohio
Radio reading services in Ohio began emerging in the 1970s, following the national movement to make printed news and information accessible to people with visual impairments. As FM subcarrier technology became more widely available, Ohio organizations—especially public broadcasters and nonprofits—started launching dedicated reading services to meet this need.
By the 1980s and 1990s, Ohio had become one of the more active states in the radio‑reading landscape. Goodwill organizations played a major role, establishing services in different regions to ensure statewide coverage. These programs typically offered readings of local newspapers, magazines, books, and community announcements, relying heavily on volunteers.
Today, Ohio’s radio reading services continue to evolve, offering both traditional broadcasts and online streaming to reach listeners wherever they are.
