The Thrill of the Thrift – My New Favorite TV Show

As I have been working on renovation and redecorating my home I wanted to share my new favorite show that has been inspiring me lately . That Thrifting Showing with Laura Spenser. Laura Spencer is no stranger to the thrifting world and secondhand community. She has expressed her love of thrifting publicly for years inspired by her late mother.

But this is not her first time hosting a thrift focused show. Who remembers Flea Market Flip?! I honestly still stream episodes of this show. Laura hosted Flea market Flip from 2012 to 2019, and she has returned with another design competition show with That Thrifting Show.

The premise of the show is 2 teams of 2 thrifters compete to redesign 2 identical rooms. Each room comes with 3 bare bone items they can keep, upcycle, or give back to be recycled. They each get a different style to design their rooms around. Who gets to choose the decor style first is decided by playing a game called the vintage shuffle. They are given 4 items from different decades and they have to match them up. I actually love playing along and testing my vintage knowledge along with the contestants

They have 2 days and $2,000 to create an amazing space that best fits their theme by shopping thrift stores, estate sales and facebook market place. One group even dumpster dived for secondhand finds. Laura says anything goes as long as it upcycled. I love that it’s not just your typical bedroom or dining room spaces that the contestants are challenged with decorating. They have taken on studios,a speak-easy’s, lounges, dens and dorm rooms to name a few.

The creativity on this show really proves that you don’t have to have a lot of money to create a stylish room. There are amazing deals to be found at the thrift store.I have been enjoying watching each episode over the past few weeks. In the intro to the show Laura says thrifting isn’t just a trend it’s a movement and I couldn’t agree more. I’m so happy to hear it was picked up for season 2! You can stream it on Hulu and Freeform. Will you be tuning in?

Stay thrifty friends,
~Taylor S.~
