What to Know Before Thrifting Electronics at Goodwill

“Wait, you can test electronics at Goodwill?!”

This was a question I received after posting one of my recent thrift finds from Goodwill on social media. This question stuck with me because, from digital cameras to lamps, some of my best thrift finds are electronics and small appliances from Goodwill.

The short answer is: Yes! But in addition to testing items, there are a few other things you can do to shop the electronics and small appliance sections with a little more confidence.

Test It Before You Buy It

Most Goodwill Akron stores have large power strips or wall outlets near the electronics section. Simply plug your item in and see if it works. If you can’t locate the testing area, ask an associate to help you.

Know the Return Policy

If you take an electronic item home and find out it doesn’t work, you can take it back. Goodwill Industries of Akron stores have a 24-hour return policy at their regular retail stores for electronics with a receipt.

Come Prepared

If you know you’ll be browsing the electronics or battery-operated items, it helps to bring a few batteries with you or keep some in your car for future visits. Some locations may have batteries available for testing so it’s worth asking.

Look up Replacement Parts

Missing a remote, attachment, cord or instruction manual? Before you leave the item behind, do a quick search online to see if a replacement is readily available. A missing piece doesn’t always have to be a deal breaker!

Remember these tips the next time you’re tempted to skip over the electronics section at Goodwill. You never know what’s waiting for you!
