A Guide to Thrifting and Styling Wool

There’s nothing quite like scoring a great find at Goodwill, but there’s something extra special about scoring a find you know you’ll use or wear time and again.

One way I try to make the most out of my thrift purchases is by paying attention to fabric content when I’m shopping for clothes. In a world overwhelmed by low-quality fast fashion, I think this matters now more than ever. I’d much rather thrift something I can wear dozens of times than something that’ll last for one season, even if the price tag is a bargain!

I’ve talked about thrifting by fabric in previous blog entries, but today I want to take a closer look at one of my favorite materials to thrift, especially during the colder months: wool.

What I look for:

I always check the fabric tag for 100% wool, merino wool, and wool blends. While I love finding 100% wool pieces, I don’t automatically pass on blends. Depending on the fabric content, they can be just as useful in my wardrobe.

How I style it

I always keep an eye out for wool blazers, sweaters, and coats in classic styles I can restyle for years. I like to dress up casual outfits with a vintage wool blazer, pair a cozy sweater with jeans or a silky midi skirt, and keep a heavy wool coat in a neutral color on hand as a cold-weather staple.

Why I thrift it:

Wool is naturally warm, holds its shape well, and lasts for years with proper care. Wool also pairs well with other textures like lace, leather, silk, and cotton.

How I care for it:

I always start by checking the care label. For pieces that can be washed at home, I follow the recommended instructions and use gentle cleaning methods. For items that require dry cleaning, I sometimes use at-home kits like Dryel to refresh the pieces.

So next time you’re out thrifting, don’t be afraid to touch the fabrics and check the care labels for natural fibers like wool. That way you can start building a sustainable, durable wardrobe of pieces you’ll reach for year after year.
