Five Goodwill Finds I Buy Before I Need Them

One thing I’ve learned over the years of thrift shopping is that not every trip has to be about finding something you need today. In reality, some of my best thrift purchases are the ones I buy long before I actually use them. Most thrifters know that if you wait until you need something, there’s no guarantee you’ll find it. Here are some examples of things I tuck away for later:

Gifts

I always keep an eye out for brand-new toys, books, games, and craft kits all year long. Having a small gift stash means I’m never making a last-minute trip to the store.

Formal Dresses

To avoid last-minute panic shopping before a formal event, I always keep a thrifted formal dress or two on hand for weddings, fundraisers, or themed events.

Gifting Supplies & Stationary

This might seem like an odd thing to thrift, but most people would be surprised by how many stationery and gift supplies end up at Goodwill. I almost always pick up gift bags, gift boxes, and baskets when I see them because I know they’ll come in handy for birthdays and holidays down the road.

Kids’ Shoes & Rain Boots

When I find the next size up in great condition, I don’t think twice. Kids grow fast, and having the next pair ready to go has saved me time and money.

Scented Candles

I always appreciate having an unused candle on hand for a gift or for myself!

Shopping secondhand isn’t about checking everything off your list in one trip but rather thinking a season or two ahead. By picking up a few things before I need them, I’ve saved money, avoided last-minute shopping, and made the most of what my thrift trip had to offer!
