How to Find Forever Pieces While Thrifting

Some thrift finds are fun for a season, a moment, or a mood. But every once in a while, you see the one: a piece that earns its place in your closet or home for years.

I used to chase massive thrift hauls and had convinced myself that a trip to Goodwill isn’t a successful one unless my cart was overflowing. Over time, shopping secondhand has taught me that building a meaningful secondhand collection isn’t about finding more, it’s about finding better. Quality over quantity is a mantra I always repeat to myself when I’m thrifting.

These are some of the qualities I’ve learned to look for when deciding whether a secondhand piece will become a forever favorite.

It Fits Your Real Life

A forever piece works beyond a single occasion or trend. It effortlessly fits into your everyday life, wardrobe or home. If I have to work too hard to think of ways to make it work in my real life, it’s most likely an impulse reaction to a cool thrift find.

The Fabric or Material Is Built to Last

Thrifting has taught me to recognize quality by touch and how to read labels correctly. Natural fibers like cotton and wool, sturdy construction, and quality details tend to hold up over time. Whether it’s a preloved sweater or a solid piece of furniture, materials matter.

You’d Still Love It If Trends Disappeared

If social media disappeared tomorrow, would you still reach for it? I’ve had to ask myself this question many times. Asking these types of questions makes it easier to step away from the cycle of trends and choose pieces that feel authentic instead of performative.

You’ve Donated (or Almost Donated) Something Like it Before

We’re creatures of habit and so often I find that I repeatedly gravitate towards the same type of items, even if I have previously donated similar items in the past. This is a pattern worth noticing. Thrifting makes impulse purchases feel low risk, but those small choices can still add up. Try asking, have I owned this before? And why didn’t it last? Your answer will help determine whether it’s meant to be a forever one. Intentional shopping means breaking the cycle, not repeating it.

There’s an Emotional Connection

Secondhand pieces often come with stories, history, meaning. Maybe they remind you of another era or milestone. If they resonate on a deep level – beyond the initial adrenaline rush, it could be your next forever piece.

Shopping for forever pieces means buying less, loving more, and building a wardrobe and home that actually reflects who you are. Here’s to intentional thrifting in the upcoming year!
