Whenever I spring clean my house, I always feel the need to change things around to make the room look a little different. Over the years I have figured out that if I refer to it as “revamping” the room instead of redecorating that seems to keep my husband from looking annoyed. This year spring cleaning/revamping started with our bathroom vanity and the project begins….
I wanted something tall so I thought a three-tier stand would be perfect. I found these unfinished wood trays in three different sizes and I had purchased a set of 5 candlesticks at Goodwill that were perfect for this project!
I wanted the trays darker to look more like a barn wood style. To achieve this look, I first brushed the trays with black paint before staining them.
Since the paint is just “dry brushed” onto the trays, drying time is minimal. By the time I was done dry brushing the last tray the first one was ready to be stained. This is what they looked like after staining.
After staining all trays I applied a clear top coat and set them aside to dry.
Next I painted the candle sticks black. While they were still wet, I wiped off paint from the edges to make them look more of an aged gold.
Now time to attach everything together.
I started with the bottom tray and worked my way up. I drilled a hole on the bottom of each candle stick and attached them to each tray. Make sure to measure your tray and mark the center before drilling your hole into the wood.
For the top candlestick I wanted it to have a “fancy” looking handle. I had a couple of extra glass dresser knobs that I took off a previous dresser that I had refinished that were perfect. One knob didn’t seem like enough so I attached two knobs together and then drilled them into the top of the candlestick.
After attaching the three trays to each candle stick I had to attach the middle tray to the top of the bottom tray candle stick and the bottom of the top tray. I used Gorilla Glue for this. I have never been disappointed with this brand of glue. It is very strong and has always worked very well with any project. I let it sit over night to make sure it bonded well.
And here is the finished project. I really like the way it turned out and the fact that it is very useful!
