Five Thrift Challenges to Try on National Thrift Shop Day (or Month!)

National Thrift Shop Day is August 17 so this month is the perfect excuse to get creative, have fun, and celebrate everything secondhand. Whether you’re a thrifting newbie or a seasoned pro, these five thrift challenges will push your style limits, help you discover new treasures, and maybe even spark a little friendly competition.

Here are some challenges to try next time you visit a Goodwill Akron store!

Shopping cart full of thrifted items.

The $20 Outfit Challenge

Set a budget of $20 and see how many complete outfits you can assemble within that limit. Bonus points if you can style for different occasions—work, casual, or a night out!

Thrift By Color Challenge

Pick a color or color family and build an outfit or haul around it. It’s a fun way to discover new shades that complement your existing wardrobe and expand your style palette.

Vintage Only Challenge

Commit to finding only vintage or retro pieces during your thrift trip. Whether it’s a 70s top, 90s denim, or an 80s jacket, you’ll get a nostalgic thrill and maybe even a one-of-a-kind find that nobody else has.

DIY Flip Challenge

Find an item and give it a DIY makeover. Whether you add patches, paint, or new buttons, this challenge combines thrifting and creativity for a truly personalized piece. Try our candle canister jar or smile face succulent mugs.

New Store Challenge

Visit a new-to-you location or try a different type of thrifting experience like the Goodwill Outlet or Blue Boutique. Both are a completely different experience yet equally fun!
